RELIGIOUS STRIFE.

THREAT HELD OUT IN FRANCE. INTERFERENCE WITH CHURCH RESENTED. By Telegraph -Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received September 29, 9 a.m.) PARIS, September 28. Revival of religious strife in France is threatened as the result of a French Cardinal’s letter to M. Herriot (Premier) begging him not to execute bis decision to suppress the French Embassy at the Vatican, or strictly to enforce the existing, laws regarding religious congregations. He urges the maintenance of the happy rapproche-

ment between Church and State which the war effected.

The clerical newspaper “ Gaulois ” considers that the letter will profoundly impress the consciences of all not blinded by stupid sectarianism.

The newspaper “Quotidien” regards the letter as a demonstration of hostility against the Government and a provocation of civil war. Jt urges M. Herriot to accept the challenge to the Republic. The newspaper “ L’CEuvre ” says: “ The priestly unctuousness of the letter scarcely conceals its threat.”
