BOWLING.
DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP. The concluding games for the doubles championship of the Christchurch Bowling Centre were played on the Christchurch Club’s green this afternoon. The conditions were ideal for bowling on account of the absence of any wind, and the green was in perfect order. Following are the results: Semi-finals. Edgeware—J. O. Hayman and W. F.lford 23, defeated Kainpoi Working Men’s Club— J. Mealings and E. Monk 13 . St Albans—J. H- Kingeland and E. A. Smith 19 defeated Dunsandel D. l. Wraiglit and J. Burgees 16. THE FINAL. St Albans v. Edgeware. The final between St Albans and Edgeware was played immediately after the semi-finals and was watched by a fair attendance of spectators. In the first head Edgeware were lying three when the skips changed over, but Smith with his first ball burnt the head. The re-played head was. won by Smith's last bowl, which drew the shot. ‘St Albans 1. Edgeware 0. Kingsland’s second bowl trailed the .la-ck and lay shot in the second head. Smith put in a "good block bowl, but Efford drew round the block and lay shot. Edgeware 1, St Albans ] The leads played good bowls in the third" head. Kingsland’s first lying shot next to the jack. Efford’s second was a toucher and got the shot. Edgeware 2. St Albans 1. Hayman played a beautiful toucher with his first in the next head. Kingslaml, however, trailed the jack and lay the shot. Eflord’s first took out Kings--1 and’s bowl and left Edgeware lying three. Smith trailed the jack a yard and lay the shot but Effort displaced him. Edgeware 3, St Albans 1. Edgeware were lying one when the leads finished. Efford added another with his first and his second was a toucher which lay the shot. Smith made an unsuccessful attempt to burn the head with his third bowl and Efford got another toucher with his last. With his last bowl Smith took an Edgeware bowl out. Edgeware 6. St Albans 1. Dayman s first in the sixth head was a toucher and his next two were also counters. Kingsland tried to burn the head with his last but failed. Efford added a fourth counter. Smith unsuccessfully attempted to burn the head with his first and his second struck a block bowl put in by Efford. Smith’s last two bowls also missed the head, Edgeware scoring a four. Edgeware 10, St Albans 3. Hayward’s third in the seventh head lay jack high and secured the shot and his last was a toucher. Efford’s first and second were also oounters, but Smith took one out. Efford drew another shot with his third and he sent his last well back. Smith’s last wicked off the shot bowl but went through the head. Edgeware scoring a three. Edgeware 13, St Albans 1. Edgeware were lying one when the skips changed over. Smith drew the shot but Efford beat it. Edgeware 14. St Albans 1. In the ninth head Edgeware were lying two when the skips changed over. Effort) drew another but Smith got second shot. Smith's third grazed the jack but did not alter the head. Edgeware 15, St Albans 1. Hayman's third was a toucher. Efford's first trailed the jack and lay the shot and hiR last promoted several others. Smith’s last overran the head, Edgeware scoring six. Edgeware 21, St Albans 1. Smith drew the shot dead with his first in the eleventh head and his next was a good second Bhot. Efford drove with his last two but missed in each case. St Albans scored a couple. Edgeware 21, St Albans 3. In the twelfth head Kingsland promoted one of Hayman’s bowls and made the shot Efford’s first bowl drew the shot and his second promoted another. Smith played a firm one and shifted the jack, but Edgeware were still lying two. Efford drew another with his last. Edgeware . .24 St, Albans 3 (Continued in Stop Press.) NOTES ON THE GAME 6. Semi-finals. Edgeware scored a six in the first head in the game against Kaiapoi Working Men s Club, and followed with a couple in the second head. The third and fourth Meads were won by Kaiapoi with a single and a couple, but Edgeware retaliated with a tour in the fifth, and couples in the sixth and seventh heads. The scores were then 16 to 2 in favour of Edgeware, nnd although Kaiapoi won eight of the thirteen heads, they could not wipe out Edgeware’s lead. Kaiapoi scored u couple in the eighth head, and singles in the ninth and tenth, but the eleventh resulted in another two for Edgeware. The twelfth head gave Kaiapoi 'a couple, and the thirteenth and fourteenth gave Edgeware singles. Kaiapoi won the next four heads with two singles, a couple and a single, the scores then reading: Edgeware 20. Kaiapoi 13. With seven points short of tie. and three heads to go Kaiapoi lost the nineteenth head, which yielded
a .single for Edgeware. The twentieth head resulted in a couple for Edgeware, and Kaiapoi then retired, ten points behind Edgeware. There were several burnt beads towards the close of the game.
Duneandel did not score until the fifth head in their game against St Albans, the latter then having a total of seven points. The fifth head yielded Ditnsandel a single, but St Albans scored a couple in the next head. Dunsatidel scored singles in the seventh, ninth and eleventh heads, but St Albans got a three in the 1 eighth, a couple in the tenth, and a single in the twelfth, the scores then reading: St Albans 15. Duusanriel 4. The next three heads gave Duneandel a couple and two singles, bringing their total to 8 against 15. Of the remaining heads St Alban* scored a single in the sixteenth and a three in the nineteenth, and Dunsandel singles on the seventeenth and
eighteenth, and threes in the twentieth and twenty-first., the final scores reading: St Albans 19, Duneandel 16. Both skips played excellent bowls, and Smith (St Albans) proved quite equal to Burgess (Dunsandel). the winner of the Maddison Trophy. In the latter stages of the game Burgess was overtaking Smith, but the latter’s big lead in the first half proved too big a handicap. Smith played a solid game throughout.
