NORTH BEACH NOTES.

The Boreugli Council has at lasti decided to erect a brushwood fence on the beach at the end of Bowhill Road, where so much inconvenience has boon experienced and damage caused by sane! drift for many weeks past.

The experiment cf placing the grass turfs, removed when forming Palmer’s Road, on the sand on the Esplanade, appears to be proving a success in spite oi lack of protection. If protection is afforded and a little more done to square it up and give it the appearance of a finish, the result should be satisfactory. The large underground tank at the corner of Tonks and Swann Streets, which has a capacity of 8100 gallons, was filled on Saturday last from the adjacent deep well, in eighty-eight minutes, showing the well to have a flow of ninety-two gallons per minute. It was regrettable that Mr W. H. Bellamy, who had taken such a keen interest in this well, should, through serious illness, be unable to bo present on the occasion of the test. With the warm, dry weather and the number of connections with the new side channels, very careful attention will be necessary, not only in the matter of, ordinary sweeping, but the more difficult question of some channels being filled with sand blown from the uncovered sides of the streets. There are also several spots where, having verv little fall, the dirty water soon becomes stagnant. The warm weather during the past few days has induced many visitor-, t-o come down for a dip. Especially was this so on the bank holiday, St Andrew’s Day. A meeting of the North Beach Gala Committee was held in the Surf Ciu'i pavilion on Monday evening. Mr E. Leaver presided over a good attend ance. It was decided to ask the city electricity’ department to provide similar lighting to last year. The following arrangements were made for stalls and sideshows:—Fancy stall. Mesdames Hutton and Snell in charge; soft drinks and ice cream. Mr and Mrs Barker in charge; counter lunch. Mrs Leaver in charge ; sand designs and children’s sports, Messrs J. G. Lawrence Scott. A. L. R. Noonan, K. M’Gillivrny, L. Gee A R. Bradbury and A. Gee; judge, Mr N M’Gillivray ; side shows and surprise packets, Messrs Snell. Hutton, Barker Bailey. Black, Thrope. Cooper. Tng ham. M’Gillivray, Glasson. Coleman, Instone, Daniels, \Vebley. Good. Gordon, Braud, Graham, Shudder. Peppier, Leverett, Macmillan. Lewis and R. Snell (convenor). The next meeting was fixed for December 6 Mr E. B. M'Donald of Osborne Terrace, has returned from Am her ley. where he has been acting-manager of the Bank of New South Wales while the manager has been on leave. Mrs Fawbert. of Bov. bill Road, lias returned from her holiday. Mr W. Arundel has returned from a tour of the Yvest Coast, where* he was pianist for a vaudeville company.
