A USEFUL MAN.

Dear Sir, —I notice that Mr M’Cordbs’ advertisement in to-day’s (t Lyttelton Times” is headed, ” A Political Humbug.” His opponents and those who have studied his politics could not have chosen more suitable words. In the same advertisement this candidate has consented to the insertion of the quotation from the “ Lyttelton Times ” of 1914, in which he is referred to as a capable and earnest man. By their questionable tactics, misrepresentation, exaggeration and humbug many capable and earnest politicians have ruined their chances of rendering good service to the community. The “Lyttelton Times” was sparing with its report in 1914; what of 1922? This paper has been watching the Socialist politician for eight years, during four of which this country was fighting for its life. Mr M’Combs has duxdng that time conducted himself as a citizen and a politician in such a way that to-day the ” Lyttelton Times ” cannot see its way to give him one word of praise. Mr Robert Macartney has been nominated by Mr Lester, Mayor of Lyttelton, and official Liberal candidate at the 1919 election. He is supported by Mr G. Armstrong;, ex-Mayor of Akaroa and at one time a Liberal candidate. He has been approached by wharf labourers, railway men, tannery workers and others who have told him in very emphatic tones that they are satisfied that his treatment of his employees during the last twenty years w sufficient proof that his attitude towards Labour is a very generous one, and he will receive their support. On his contracting jobs he shares the- rough and tumble of the worker’s life. He is a thoroughly practical man with proved administrative ability. In all his undertakings in both civil and military life his ability, personality, energy ana good nature always take him to> the top. Place your confidence in the useful man. He is not a professional politician. —I am, etc. LYTTELTON.
