BOWLING

Green and Club Notes—By

“Toucher "

The Pennant competitions were continned last Saturday under ideal weather conditions, and as usual the results provided a number oi surprises. The following is a summary of the results of the matches played: - SECMTON A. Sumner 3 games v. Christchurch 9. St Albans 2 games t. Paparuo- 1. Edgeware 2 games v. Opawa 1. SECTION B. Sydenham 21 The- teams which have had two win: and no looses in the various section' ore a« follows: —Section A. Sumne’ and St Albans; Section B. Christ church: Section C. Edge ware ; Soctior I>, Christchurch ; Section E, United Section F. Canterbury and Linwood B Pennant —Section A. St Albans Section B. Sumner and Canterbury Section C-. Canterbury. There have of course, been byes in several of tli sections and it is too early in the com petition to judge of the prospects o the various clubs.

There were several instances • r matches being won bv a single point on Saturday. Jt happened in the Edgeware v. St Albans and Christchurch v. Linwood matches in Section B of the A Pennant, and the Canterbury r. St Albans match in Section V The B Pennant matches were mostly won bv large majorities, the closest being the Sumner v. Sydenham contest. in which Sydenham won by a margin of four points. There was one ease in which a tie occurred between two rinks, hut it did not affect the result of the match. While the results of all the matches were received at the “*' Star ” Office last Saturday very promptly, it is regrettable that in the match between New Brighton and Opawa on the New Brighton green, the result was given incorrectly as a win for New Brighton instead of Opawa. Beaumont's (New Brighton) rink was credited with a win against Bruce’s (Opawa.) rink, whereas Bruce won the game, enabling Opawa to win the match by two games to one. The utmost care is always exercised in obtaining the results of matches and it was unfortunate that the mistake should have occurred. A proposal that B likely to cause a great deal of discussion at the next meeting of the centre is contained ir a letter from the Beckenham Club This club expresses the opinion that the pennant, competitions for the remainder of this season should be abandoned on tbe grounds that they have been delayed through two postpouenenfs and that it will be difficult- tc get tbe championship games off if the competitions are continued. The lettei w ill most likely provoke discussion or the policy of the centre in regard t< the pennant competitions. It is re-cog wised by many bowlers that there is r likelihood of the com petitions becoming so unwieldy that they will break rtowi under their own weight. and snm< players arc of the opinion that. som< new system of inter-dub games wil peed to be instituted. Tn any ease th> discussion should be very’ interestinj and some good may result from th Beckenham Club’s letter.

Official advice has ween received by j the centre, to the effect that n New* j South Wales team consisting of about twenty players will visit Christchurch during tbe first week in February, and will remain here for three or four days, j The Centre Buttons have changed hands again. Alealing’s rink having defeated Cheg win’s rink. Price (Edgeware) will play Mealirigs. and there are four other challengers ready to enter the lists. Up to the present no rink has succeeded in holding the buttons twice this season. Beckenham. Sydenham and New Brighton clubs have entered teams for the Canterbury Colts’ Shield competition. and the first match between Beckenham and Canterbury (the holders) will take place- to-dy. Entries for the Centre’s Christma-s tournament will close on December 11. and as it is anticipated that there will be something of a rush, clubs will be well advised to get in early. Already ! quite a number of entries have been ; received i ! On Set nr--]ay a team of eight- rinks, : or thirt -two players, trill arrive from I Timaru by motor-cars to try con- | elusions with the Christchurch Centre : The visitors expect to arrive about ' midday, and will be taken to the St Alban® bowling green by cars, leaving the- Clarendon Hotel at 2 p.m. At the ! conclusion, the visitors will return to the hotel, and in the. evening will be I entertained by the local centre at the Exhibition and at the Opera House. The. party will leave on their return ; journey on Sunday morning.

The pennant competitions will ne continued next Saturday in addition to the match Christchurch v. South Canterburv. lr had Ix'cn intended not to play pennant matches on that day. but on account- of the iater.ess in start in- the competitions. it wa* considered advisable to take advantage of the opportunity of sav.ng any delays. A committee has also boon set up to fry and secure tlv services of a suitable man to do tj'e resting. After Dunedin and Caversham had played a few heads in their four-rink game lasr Wednesdav night vain stopped play, Dunedin being then 9 points ahead. Winn phi' i w ns resumed on Thursday night the j question arose whether they should start anew or resume with the scores as they stood the previous evening There was no vultug to go upon, but at the executive meeting on Mondn night Messrs Todd and Hanning, the Caversham representatives, said that the Dunedin men. in a true sporting spirit, had agreed to start the game afresh. They thought it would be more satisfactory to have a rule on the matter. It was decided that *t 5 an average of six heads had been play- * ed (that is. twenty-four heads for the - team’) the match should continue on the. l scores obtained: otherwise the competition should begin anew.
