The Appointments’ Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Department expressing a hope that the board would accept Canadian teachers In exchange for Misses Morrison and Valentino. The secretary explained to the Department that the board had willingly accepted Canadian teachers in exchange for the Canterbury teachers named. Letters had been received from the Department in regard to teachers in receipt of salaries over scale. The letters pointed out that under the new Amendment Act it was obligatory on hoards to effect transfers before throwing the vacant positions open to competition by other teachers. In regard to salaries of grade 0 teachers, a letter had been received from the Department pointing out that under the Act at present £IOO was the limit up to which residents could be aeked to subsidise salary, but expressing willingnessj to make it, say, £l5O. It was decided to teply that in view of the present cost of living the board could not secure suitable teacherß who would remain for less than £l5O, and that a provision to meet that would be wise. The report was adopted. TIMARU SCHOOLS. Messrs Hughes, Armitage and Maze, southern members of the board, reported o;t the accommoda.tion necessary for children living in Timaru and suburbs. The committee considered:—The overcrowded state of Waimataitai Schodl; the probability of overcrowding at Timaru West; the necessity for the provision of school accompaodation at Marchwiel. The health of th© children and teachers and efficiency of instruction and training demanded relief in some form ajt Waimataitai; there should be a redistribution of pupils or increased accommodation by February 1 next. Rome relief probably would be needed at Timaru West, as well as at Waimataitai. In view of all the data, and taking into consideration the fact, especially, that Waimataitai school had reached the maximum attendance con sistent with effective administration, and to obviate the serious resuits that further inaction would entail, the committee recommended ;—lmmediate temporary relief at Waimataitai by the provision of a marquee to hold at least fifty pupils, pne complete class; if proved accessary, a similar provision to be mode at Timaru West School; the raising of Timaru West School to the statue of a main school, in which all standards should be accommodated and taught, for which purpose two or three additional rooms would be necessary; a temporary schoolroom, of tho class suggested by the Education Department, to accommodate 80 to 100 pupils

j to be erected on the board's section at Marchwiel. In view of the necessity and ¥ urgency for making provision for school ’ accommodation in th© Timaru district the committee could not recommend the board to accept responsibility for any course of action entailing further delay in providing the necessary school accommodation in the schools in' Timaru and its suburbs. The report was supported hy Mr Andrews, who visited the schools, and w%* adopted. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. | The Buildings Committee reported that < the Addington committee had protested against the proposed use of tho Anglican Schoolroom as a temporary school, and it had been decided to apply to the Department for a grant for a temporary school at Addington or in Lyttelton Street. An application for improved drainage and repairs from the Christchurch West com mittee had been referred to the chairman of the Buildings Committee. It had been decided to take no action in regard to an offer by Mr J. Crothers to sell land adjoining the Wharenui School grounds. The architect had been instructed to report on an application for aYi up-to-date heating apparatus in the Woolston School. Mr Bignell, chairman of the Buildings Committee, submitted a report recommending that improvements and repairs at t.h© Christchurch West School should be taken in hand. He said that the total estimated cost was £2lB. The work was absolutely necessary in order to make the school sanitary. Mr Bignell’s report was adopted, and it was decided to ask the Department for permission to debit as much of the expenditure as possible to the Rebuilding Fund. MISCELLANEOUS. Tho Normal School Committee reported in connection with the Linwood associated school that a further letter had been received from the Department declining to pay the travelling expenses of students attend id Pf associated schools.
