The Simmer Gala. Committee did ■well to include four rowing races in their programme, as they will undoubtedly pro-re- n. valuable attraction. The gala will be held to-morrow, the rowing races starting at about 4 p.m. They will consist, of four double sculls contests. and have attracted entries from tho Avon. On re, Union, Canterbury and Sumner Clubs. Avon should win three of the four The junior race will probably go to Horne and Taylor, of the Union Club, who won at Akaroa.. However, ao Henry and Staples are rowing against them the contest should be well worth watching. The draw for positions at the Sumner Gala resulted as follows, Ho, 1 being the south side position :—• Youths:—l, Union: 2, Canterbury ? 3, Avon; 4. Sumner; o, Cure. Ala iden s : —l. A. new Christchurch Regatta Club was launched last night, under favourable circumstances. There was a good attendance, 3nd a useful selection of officers was made The door to door begging, which has been necessary for the support of the annual Christchurch regatta, will be unnecessary, it. is hoped, now that the club has been put on a financial ha sis. The regatta w ill bo held-on. February 25 ot Lake Forsyth, and the '* donation, ’ or prize, money wilt amount to £9B Following is the programme, with the amounts of donation, money for first and second crews > — Senior double sculls, £8 and £2. The last mentioned race is an innovation. designed to ehcourage the- lighter men in the chibs, who might not get a decent chance in. an open event. Weights are to be certified by the clubs entering crews, the certificate to accompany the entry. The Avon R.C. Club Fours was rowed off during the past week. In the first heat AY. Browne, A. 8. Clark. W. Tull and C. Milieu beat D. M/Gibbon, K. A. Keys, R. J\fitclieli and H. Stewart by half a length. The second beat resulted in P. Kixton. R. Masters. F- C. Hanham and H. Poult on winninsr from W. Scott, G. Kitten, C. H- Boswell aud C. Roberts by three lengths. In the final AY. Browne heat P. Barton by three lengths. Entries are now being received for the Sugden Fours Cup. The crews selected to represent the club at Stunner Gala have been training during the past week. The senior double scullers, C. Champ and "AY. Newman, are going well together. Newman appears to have struck form again. The junior double scullers. E. Staples and A. Henry, have not rowed together since, last season ; they are a good combination. and should give the winners of this event at Akaroa a hard race. The maiden double scullers, F. Agassiz and E. Barkle, hare put in some good work since Akaroa, and should repeat their performance. The youths’ double scullers. C. Stiles ' and F. Tvirton. have been doing steady work. They have plenty of pace, hub on the short Sumner course a lot. depends on getting Quickly off the mark. Two challenge races in connection with the Sumner Gala, hare been rowed by Union. Horne and Taylor defeated Grenfell and Ellis in the juniors and Byers and C. Yates defeated N. and C. Moulin io the maidens. Thus the selected crews retained Hie honour. The youth s’ crew should race well At Akaroa, although disqualified, they put up a good performance, finishing close up m third place with the bow of their boat half full of water.
