He took part in the famous Ostend and Zeebruggee raid, standing to for over two hours under heavy fire. Later he was. Etationed at Whitby where he remained until the end of the war. On returning to Christchurch he -.again took up his trade, but the strain imposed on him on active service compelled him to take outdoor work.
