BRIGHTON BREEZES.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [FeOM Oca CORBESPONDKVT.I ■New Brighton, is in a transient stage. Tile old regime of overhanging hedges and boughs of trees is about to come to an end- The council will shortly cmbark 'upon n. campaign which, will have tor its object the removal of obstructions to pedestrians on many footpaths. There axe hedges in the borough which encroach upon the footpath as much as 3ft din. PARISHIONERS’ MEETING. A meeting of members of the Anglican Church was held ou Juue 14. the principal business being to consider a resolution passed by tbo vestry in favour of a. loan of £l6O from the Church Property Trustees for the purpose of painting arid repairing; the vicarage and church. The action of the vestry was confirmed. Other matters were then discussed, and. iL was decided to push on the work of proviu ing funds for the erection of the new church* the amount at present in hand being about £1750. A proposal tor the erection of a parish ball by funds provided on the* Star-BowUett system was placed before the meeting, but it was decided to coucentrato oil efforts on the building of the church, after which the present church will bo available as parish room and school.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see that the New Brighton Borough Council are on the job about the hedges which are obstructing the footpaths, and I think it is a very good thing for the council to tackle. No doubt it was all right in the old davs when New Brighton was only a mere handful of people, but the population is getting very large, and many X-teoplo are complaining. In some places thero is hardly room for two people to walk abreast. I know the council can’t do wonderful things in the way of new work, because they haven’t got the money, but I do think they cam make their term worth while by remedying such matters as overgrowing hedges, uneleanliness and tintidiness; and there is also one other thing at least, that ought to He attended to. I refer to horses being allowed in 'small sections in the borough alongside another man’s property, which he is trying to keep tidy and olean. I think it is a shame that manure should be allowed to accumulate or that horses should be allowed at all in. the borough iu small sections next to other people's bouses. There are all sorts of objections, to say nothing of flies. If the council wil get on to these matters they will have my support and the support of a largo number of ratepayers I know of.—T am, etc. SOUTH BRIGHTON.

NORTH BEACH NQTES. 4ib a special meeting of the North Brighton and Waimain Burgesses’ Association, it was announced that the secretary wished to resign his position. Mr Phil Wathman has been connected with the association since he took up bin residence in the district, and has carried out the secretarial duties ever sine© the North Beach amalgamated with the Wafmairi Association, iii a highly commendable way, and at thfe sacrifice of a great deal of his leisure. The meeting persuaded Mr Whatman to withdraw his resignationA matter that could be brought to the notice of our Borough Council is the neglected condition of the Esplanade footpath. As the result of sand from

unfenced sections blowing on to it. the hard pathway, which was put down at the expense of the residents of the Esplanade, is now restricted to a track. The sections should be fenced, and properly, too, to con hue the sand within the area of the sections. The council would bo bestowing a blessing if they would u£© tbeir powers and see that tbo pathway is restored. There are some potholes, too, and thero is the risk of an accident. It is encouraging to notice the lively interest displayed in purely local requirements, but so far wo hare heard no remarks about the appearance of tbo footpath aud roadway on the main road in the vicinity of Grantly Street. The appearance is distinct I v rural. Gala events occupied the attention of a number of tbo more serious-mind-ed of the local residents whrn the balaneo-Hhect. for the last gala was presented. The results were verv encouraging, and great credit is reflected on tbo executive, and Mr R. Lcckic in particular for the amount of cash subscriptions obtained. It is a worthy object, and it is encouraging to see the way that a section of the business I>eop]e acknowledge this by their liberal donations. The usual monthly “Yankee” tournament of tho North Beach Tennis Club was bold during the week-end. Tho members had an cniovable day’s play, tbo winners being Messrs J. Russell aud E- TV. T. Reese.
