A meeting of the Domains Fete Com* mittee was held last night, Mr H. J. Beswick presiding. The Horticultural Society and Sweet Pea and Carnation Society wrote offering to assist in any way possible. It was decided to ask them to send two representatives each to the committee. It was agreed that art union tickets should admit to the flower show. The sulrfcommiltteea were requested to report to a meeting next Friday. Tho Woolston Band will play a seleoed programme of sacred music on the Victoria Square Rotunda on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, when a collection will bo made to help defray tho expenses of the band attending the coming contest at Dunedin. Alexander Ellis, a small farmer, was fined in the Dunedin Police Court Yesterday by Mr Bartholomew, S.M./for working in his paddock, adjacent to the Kaikoura Valiev Road, on last Sunday. It was stated that tho defendant, after till tho church hells ceased ringing went to work drilling, manuring and sowing turnips with a team of two horses, assisted by a small bov. Tho work that was being done by Ellis could have been done during tho week, but Ellis stated emphatically that as ho had been delivering milk and doing other necessary work all the week, and as the season was a late one, it was absolutely essential that he should get his turnips in as soon as possible. Ho admitted, however, that ho had worked on tho two previous Sundays also. His witnesses (small farmers, too) agreed that Sabbath or no Sabbath Ellis was m all circumstances justified in taking advantage of weather conditions which ir Ti cei f rar ° this summer. Air Bartholomew, in giving his dooision, said that a. Magistrate in tho North Island had held that farming operations did not oomo within the provisions' of the Act. He (Mr Bartholomew), however, did! not consider this decision a sound one.
