SUMNER RIPPLES.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Our Correspondent.] THE FIRST SHOAV. The Sumner-Redcliffs Horticultural Society is to be congratulated upon the great success of its first show. If a display in an “off season” can fill the Town Hall, tho question is being freely asked, where will the society holu its next for the blooms of early December The Hon J. Barr, A1.L.0., in declaring the season open, heartily congratulated tho society upon its achievement and specially referred to tho good work done by the secretary, Air C. M. Roswell, and tho executive committee, The judges had told him that, for quality and variety, the show could not be excelled by any other show in or around Christchurch. The Clifton ex hibitors made a very pleasing showing indeed, while the carnations and sweet peas from the Sumner Valley, the brilliant colouring from Scarborough, and the excellence of the vegetables from Redcliffs showed that the sandy borough is not as barren asris generally supposed. I LIFE SAVING. The weather during the week has been in the cool side and little bathing has been done. Three members ot the local Life Saving Club attended the meeting in the city for tho consideration of the appointment of beach controls, Air S. Jv. Bassett supplying valuable suggestions for launching tne scheme. Tho local club, which has always been ably supported by the residents, feels that the services of a responsible officer on the beach would bo very valuable indeed, and its members are willing t 0 render nil the assistance they can. Further, with the co-operation of the lifeboat brigade, Urn protection ef tho beaches should bo as efficient ns volunteer service could make it anywhere. The local club is considering a scheme lor tho education of the general public in life saviim methods, by means of the electrically lit lantern. bowling. Five greens have been used on the local bowling green this week in connection with the_ Dominion championslupsj and the friendly and companionabb bowler has been much in evidence in the boVough. A great deal of cave has been bestowed upon the greens in order to give the visitors a fair nin and, judging by comments made by th-' competitors in the doubles, the result has been highly satisfactory. PERSONAL. Word was received this week that Air AA, S. Heves has been appointed manager of the Eltham Gas Works. Air Heyes will be well remembered as the first manager of tho Sumner Gas Works. Ho superintended the erection of the present plant and, during Hie iirst four years, was successful in’placing his department on a very sound footing. He resigned to go into camp, and during the outbreak of influenza held a responsible position in the '.management of the severe cases, heiim specially commended for Iris work. The matter has been, brought before the council, and that body, some time ago, stated that it would hold over further consideration until a public meeting of residents had fully discussed the questipn.
