Mnjor R. Logan and Major A. H. Carrington hare been appointed to positions on the Christchurch staff of the Defence Department. The Spreydon Borough Council has informed the Mayor that it wiji give a grant of .£SO for the peace celebrations in the city and will supply four men to help in the arrangements. At the residence of Mr J. Smith, 20, Crohane Street, Addington, a welcome homo was tendered to Staff-Sergeant R. J. Hashing, wdio recently returned by the Arawa, after seeing service in England and France. At a meeting of tbo North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Railway Officers’ Institute the following resolution was carried unanimously “That this branch views with alarm and strong; disapproval the Minister’s action in vetoing the unanimous decision of the Appeal Board in the recent Longton case, and that the Minister be respectfully asked to reconsider bis decision; also that strong representation be made by denutation to the Minister and Cabinet that in all eases of unanimous decisions by the Appeal Board the Minister should not have the right to exercise his power of veto.”
