Sir James Allen yesterday officially opened the Southland Home for Convalescent Soldiers at Enwood, before a large assemblage. Ho declared tjiat the Government favoured such homes, but stated that oases requiring special treatment needed to be sent to special institutions.—Press Association. Mr Douglas Porter, of the Egypt General Mission, will give a freq illustiated lecture on "Mission lY the Land of the Pharaohs," m the Y.M.U.A-, on Tuesday evening next. The lantern slides will bo interesting to many whose soldier relatives have passed through the recent Egyptian campaign. Amongst the mail received by the Trentham Dominion Scholarships Fund the other day was a letter from the honorary secretary of the church committee of All Saints’ Church, Hokitika, enclosing a cheque for £5 6s 7d —the. proceeds of an offertory taken up on Anzac Day —“ trusting that your fund may grow and he of lasting benefit to many a hero’s child." 11 This,” says the secretary of the Scholarships Fund, “is an excellent example for other churches up and down. Hew Zealand to follow.” The purpose of the fund, to open the avenues of higher education to the children of New Zealand’s heroes who have made the great sacrifice, commends itself to everyone. _Mr T. M. Charters, District Repatriation Officer, stated to a reporter yesterday that it had been brought under the notice of the Repatriation Board that returned men were in some cases incurring liabilities by paying a deposit on a business and then submitting their applications for financial assistance to the board. It must be distinctly understood, said Mr Charters, that applicants must first submit their proposals before committing themselves in any way whatever. There were still numbers of applications for assistance from men who wished to start in the taxi business. Many of the applicants had little or no experience in that business- Then, again, the board had to take into consideration the matter of public safety, and no man with nerve trouble or allied complaints could he assisted into the taxi business.
