SCARCITY OF DOCTORS.

RELIEF IN SIGHT. The Hospital Committee's report, presented at. to-dny's meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, stated Hunt, Dr Edgar, .junior house surgeon at the Hospital, had resigned, and that Dr Dclamero had consented to undertake the duty as a resident at a salary of I'-100 per annum, subject- to her being able, to leave in the event of circumstances demanding such action.

The report added: This still leaves the resident, staff short-handed, but, tho following letter 'to Dr Fox. from the sub-dean of the. I'liivrrsity of Ola go gives some hope that relief may he obtained in the near future:- -

'■ I am mooting the iinal year men on Friday to ascertain as far as ]>ossiblo which hospitals 'they prrfor to work in. There will In; ten or twelve men. either qualified or partly qualified, alter the examination, which concludes on August _'. I do not know Auckland's requirements yet, lint Wellington wants five and Chris-.'church three; Dunodin will maua.go lor the present with senior students, so that wo shall he able to send you at least two men and may manage to send threie. Wo nro not able to send 'the. men off as wo would like just now. because as soon as thov qualify the leave which they were wanted by the, Military Appeal Boards expires, and they are supposed to report for duty to the area officer. It involves all sorts of complications and. delay, so that T think this time it would bo better to send a list of tlio men to G'niera] Henderson and I>r Vnlintinc with the requirements of tho hospitals and the proposed distribution of th 0 men. About the middle of September wo shall be able to supply as many final year men as you want, a.s we are again hurrying up the final classes so thait the men -will bo free to act as house, surgeons until tho middle of January."
