MACLEODS AND THE BAGPIPES.

The death of the Rev Dt Donald MacLeod' has called forth a number of reminiscences concerning the family. Dr Norman Macleod was a, great lover of bagpipe music. Once when he was on a. short holiday at Bridge of Tilt he had the Duke of Atholl's favourite old piper, John Macpherson, every day in the neighbouring pine woods or in the lower glen to play th e grandest of the pibroebs, laments and salutes. One day in the lower glen Piper John played as he alone could " The Mackintosh Lament," while Norman was still sore over the loss of his beloved brother-in-law.. "The Earnest Student." " The curving glen doubled and caressed the notes of one of the finest and most pathetic of native melodies," says the writer who recalls the incident, " the rippling water added its subdued harmony, and the great-hearted Norman, with bowed head and surging emotions, was again in communion with the Past and with the ages old question of "What might have been."
