Rutherford, the Hills randiin the proud position of Queen of Gratitude. The election ■.. - mooted towards the end of 1915 as a- nioun> of placipg the Canterbury Patriotic Fund cn a, round .financial footing. At that * time, owing to the e-r.rly demands for Belgian relief and Bed Cross ' worfj, the Patriotic" Fund, fo'u the relief of soldiers and their dependents, was in a very low condition, the funds running to less than '£40,000. With a clear run .in the new year, it. was hoped to add the sum of £IOO,OOO to the fund, and this hop© has beeh amply realised. To-night, in the King Edward Barracks, a vast concourse is witnessing thq crowning cererriony. of the successful candidate, with her late rivals in attendanco as< maids of honour.
