ROLL OF HONOUR.
TROOPER L N. THOMPSON. After waiting for several months for official news of his son. Trooper Eric Norton Thompson, A Squadron, Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment, Thud Reinforcements, Mr F. W. Thompson, of Christ church, has come to the conclusion that lie was killed in action on the Gallipoli peninsula on or about August 27. Mr Thompson's son-in-law, Private Frank P. Martin, was killed by the bursting of a Turkish shell on the date mentioned, and Trooper Thompson was fighting alongside him at that time. Trooper Thompson was in the habit of writing to his father by every mail, but no letter has arrived from him since the receipt of one written a, lew hours before bo went into action on August '-7. Trooper Hankius (Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment), writing from the front to people in Palmerston North. says: "There is a Mrs Addison in Palmerston. who used to be a Miss Thompson from Christchurch. T think von know her well. I knew her brother quite well, and was with him when he was killed. I would like you to tell her lie died like a man in the very thick of the fight, and that will, no doubt, be a comfort to them, he was killed instantaneously, poor chap." Inquiries made have not, so far. resulted in confirmation being received from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Base. "Writing just before going into action Trooper~ThoniPson said: ''Must .a lino to you in case f strike trouble. We are goinc; into a bit of an attack in a couple of hours. Some of us must go under, perhaps a lot, but it is in other hands Hum mi no.' So all T hope is I yet a chance to clo a bit against the festive Turk before 1. strike trouble. But I wili lie all right." Trooper Thompson, the younger son of Mr F. W. Thompson, was born in 1892. He was educated at Christ's College, where he had a. very successful career. He matriculated when fourteou years of aao and passed his medical preliminary the following year. In 1905 he won the prize offered bv the Canterbury Navy League o:i "Exnloits of the Navy from 1000 to 1700." He .-.uont four years at Slonvhurst. learning farming, and was iri the Hawked Ray district when he enlisted in the Wellington Mounted Raiment of the Third Reinforcements. In height be was a. six-footer, and be was possessed of great physical strength.
