KILLED BY A DRAY.
A DRIVER'S DEATH. - Mr H. W. Bishop, District Coroner," held an inquest to-day into the circunlstances connected with the death of ] John James Hewitt, a driver, of Syden- ' ham, who was killed yesterday by a*. dray going over him. •; Dr M'Diarmid. house surgeon at the., hospital, to which deceased was taken, : | stated that death was due to shock, as-'| sisted by hemorrhage. ~ ..-V, Miss A. M. Cole, housekeeper for 'the deceased, stated that he was fifty years" of age, and had one child, a girl of sixl' James W. Hunter, a draper, stated that he saw the accident. At 12.40 p.m. yesterday, when cycling to town.,near the Waltham Road crossing, he-,' saw Hewitt's dray coming along. The horse seemed to be somewhat frisky.' 1 " Hewitt tried to slash the horse .with tlie loose reins. He seemed to lose'his footing and slipped down between:* the hindquarters of the horse and tho.' wheel. The dray passed over him. The' horse bolted and Hewitt was left lying' on the road. Witness had him placed, in a conveyance without delay,"and he , was sent to the hospital. It was a pnr.e accident- _ The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed by, being mm over by a dray.
