HANMER SPRINGS.

THE SANATORIUM AND BATH HOUSE GROUNDS. SOME RECENT IMPROVEMENTS. The recent showery weather at Han- ( mar, Springs, and the solid work-> put in j by the gardeners have had the desired , effect, and the grounds in consequence | show a very marked improvement. The only drawback to the beauty is the dilapidated macrocarpa fence, with patches of dead wood at intervals, which surrounds the main' portion of the grounds and gives tno visitor a poor idea of the beauty tnat it screens. After passing the gates, however, neatly-kept lawns are seen, the verges of which are nicely trimmed. ■• The paths are all freshly gravelled and raked. Seata are placed all around in shady corners, where those desirous of quiet chats, or who like needle work, may rest themselves. For those who want some more active amusement, bowls, tennis or croquet can be played, all requisites for the various games being provided by the Tourist Department, a very ' small charge being made. The bowling green, which for years past has been practically unplayable, has received attention, and now has a very much more businesslike appearance, Among the flowering shrubs, particularly noticeable are two fine bushes of guelder roses and rhododendrons. At the rear of the masseuse rooms, around the swimrniiig pools, Bancsia and other roses are climbing, in great proiusion. At intervals, dotted through the grounds, are some fine specimens of the golden and Irish yew, Cedrus deodara, retinospora ericoides, sequoia sempervirens, variegated bamboos, Weigelia rosea, Australian may and many others, too numerous to mention. The rose and flower beds are promising a grand display of blooms in about a week's time, and some good beds of petunias and verbenas are also showing great promise. Dr Campbell Duncan is still in the North Island, under the Health Department, and the date of his return is uncertain. The matron is enjoying a well-earned holiday, as her duties lately have been of a most arduous nature. Dr Slater is temporarily in charge of the Sanatorium, assisted by Nurse Kissel, both of whom are very j popuular, not only with the patients, but also with those with whom thoy | come in daily contact.
