THE FERRY SERVICE. ARRIVAL OF THE PA TERN A. After a good passage of just under fifteen hours, tho Union Company's Pateena reached port as a quarter past eleven, and, in contrast to her arrival two days previously she was berthed quietly and without incident. There was a large crowd on the wharf, and the staff of police had no difficulty in preventing the inquisitive ones from crowding round the mail vans. The vessel is still manned by masters, engineers and officers from various ships, and also a few arbitration ists. There were about one hundred and eighty pas. sengers on board. \ The Pateena will return to Wellington on arrival of the 7.40 p.m. train. THE CLIMAX. ■ r . . . . • \ \ POLICE TO INVESTIGATE. During the past few days several members, of the Lyttelton: Waterside Workers' Union have shown some illfeeling towards the permanent staff of the Union Company on account of the action of the men in coaling the lerry steamer, and on more than one occasion some unpleasant epithets have been thrown out-. The climax was reached at a late hour last night, when, it is alleged, a certain individual visited the premises of a * member of the staff and uprooted trees in the orchard, killed a number of fowls, and did a quantity, of other sundry dam"age. * . _ . The steamer Northern, with about 1000 tons* of New York cargo, is expected to leave Wellington today for Lyttelton, and it is understood she will take up an anchorage in the stream until arrangements have been made to berth the vessel in the. inner harbour. Altogether there is about 10, COO tons of cargo for Lyttelton held up in Wellington. So.far, the Lyttelton Harbour Board has n<Jt made any move in the direction of erecting barricades across the wharves, but it is stated preparatory operations are under Tray.

Just after the ferry steamer had been berthed, "a message, purported to have come from Auckland, was circulated to the effect that the strike had. been declared off iii.the northern capital. The message soon gained currency along the waterfront, .but in the absence of information frofn a reliable quarter the news was not taken seriously.
