WELLINGTON BOWLING.

[Fkom Oca Correspondent.J November 7. Saturday last turned out a splendid day from a bowler's standpoint. There Hvas not a move in the air, the boisterous northerly being noticeably absent on the day. But the bowlers were indeed lucky to strike it fine. It rained on Friday evening, and on Saturday night the elements again descended, and continued their onslaught all day Sund'ay, preventing play on the Monday on most of the gteens. The' said greens were rather " queer" in ,a number of cases for Saturday's

play after the rain on. Friday night, whilo others wore iu almost poi'loct condition. , , r , , Tho chief contests last uaturday wore between tho several clubs "l tho first round of tho Pennant competition. This year two new clubs—Boatoun ana Lyall Ray—are in the contest, also Khandailah, and their games with the Senior clubs of tho city should be or educative valuo to tho now membera.) Ono feature of tho games last a A ur r day was the largo number of ties that took place in the rink games. Two Karori and Hataitai rinks tied, <>no gatno finished up 21 all and tho other 17 all. Then, again, a Kolburno and a Wellington rink tied' at 18 all. Another pair of rinks with honours even were those skipped by a Thorndon and a Huit player, with tho scoro at 2A apiece. And, lastly, a feoatonn Hide made a level go with a To Hiwi four with 17 each. The various games resulted: —Karori 84, Hataitai 77, Kelburno 72, WellmgI ton 67, Newtown 113, Lyall Bay 58, 1 ! To Hiwi 88, Soatoun 61, Petond Kb, Khandailah 62, Hutt 90, Thorndon <->3. We havo often, heard of tho Thorndon Hoses and tho Thorndon Shamrocks. Now wo hear of the Thorndon Thistles. This is tho emblem of the Homeland complete in the Thorndon Clubs' throe challenge competitions. Theao thistles aro two cold badges for pairs games, and 1 have been presentod to tho club by Mr D. RoAs. The conditions of tho game are to play seventeen heads, no more than one drive in each, head by either skip, the idea of the donor being to encourage drawing. The donor is one of tho foundation members of the Thorndon _ Club, and has worthily represented it on many occasions. _ Notwithstanding tho assault of Pattie, Buckeridge, Turnbull and P. Brandon (skip), tho Shamrocks of Thorndon still remain in the possession of Barraud's rink, the score being 20 to 18 against the challengers. At tho close of the afternoon's play on the Lyall Bay Club's green on Saturday a happy little function took place. Mr J. Stansell, the club's popular president, reached the "throe score years and ten" mark, and tho membors of the club celebrated the event by presenting him., through their secretary, Mr Morrah, with a gold bowl for hifS watch-chain. In replying, Mr Stansell reciprocated bv presenting to the club, on behalf of Mrs Stansell, a very beautiful shield. The inscription on it is to the effect that it was presented by Mrs Stansell to commemorate her husband's seventieth birthday and to establish friendly rivalry for its possession between the Hataitai, Seatoun and Lyall Bay Clubs. As Mr Stansell explained that Captain Cook is supposed to have landed at or near Lyall Bay, his ship Endeavour and a couple of incidents in connection with his land'infg are engraved on the bottom of the. shield, and a man delivering a bowl decorates the top centre of tho_ main shield. The shield was tli© object of very great admiration bv all present.
