AT PORT.

; WANT OF TACT. !' A PROGRESS REPORT. "LANGUAGE MORE FORCIBLE* THAN POLITE." The Press Committee of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union handed to the newspapers yesterday for publication the following progress report : From the Strike. Committee at the Waterfront. We have to report that the following resolution was carried unanimously by the Union:—That this Union has full confidence in the Strike Committee and also in the National Executive. We have also to acknowledge with' thanks a cheque for £lO handed to the Strike Com--3 mittea by a local tradesman. The 1 Pateena arrived at about 1 p.m., manned partly by captains and of--3 ficers of the Union SteamShip Com--3 pany. We consider that an officer ' on the forecastle head showed great 3 want of tact by using language more 1 ' forcible than polite, thus giving a 1 bad lead to the men gathered on the 1 wharf. We also noticed boards 3 hanging from.the ship's rails denot- '' ing that this ship is under overhaul, and we wonder if the overhauling continued on the passage from Lyttelton. ! AN EXPLANATORY NOTE. 3 The incident referred to in the Strike 1 Committee's report occurred as the Pa- • teena was being tied up to the wharf, i A knot of men approached the vessel i' and gave three cheers for the sailors fc and firemen who had gone on strike i and hoots and groans lor the officers I j who were manning the ship on her 3 i present trip. One of the officers on the II forecastle head, who appeared to re- . ! gard the whole thing as a joke, called 1 ! out to one of the men on the wharf, 1 | " What's the matter with you, Gin- - ! ger?" garnishing the remark with one • or two swear-words. There was uol thing acrimonious in his manner, and : nobody appeared particularly shocked : : bv his language. 1 ; "In regard to the matter of overhaul--3 ing, the°Patcena was under overhaul in 3 Wellington when requisitioned for the t ferry service. She evidently "came 1 away in a hurry, for a notice board, - stating that tho ship was being oyer--7 hauled' and warninsr workmen against s own hatches and other openings in i tlio deck, was displayed above the - crani'iva.v. The shin's lifeboats, also, . were uncovered, indicating that she . put to sea at very short notice. The : : reference to overhauling being coni I tinned on the way from Wellington' is t evidently meant to be sarcastic.
