TRADE HANDICAPS. DRIVEN OUT OF BUSINESS. A Roval Commission was appointed some time ago to enquire into the question of the Saturday Half-holiday, under the Presidency of Mr. Justice Street. After hearing evidence, Mr. Justice Street came to the conclusion that th® introduction of the half-holiday wouiti be an injustice; yet, in the face of this finding, Mr. Wade introduced the Act for the purpose of catching Votes. It failed in this respect, but the consummation of Jhe Saturday Half-holiday into law had been the means of ruining or partially ruining large numbers of business men in fr lhe County of Cumberland. Already the Shopkeepers' Defence Association had secured over 80,000 signatures calling upon Parliament to repeal the Act Under existing conditions shopkeepers were being forced out of business. Already they had the shopkeepers of Newcastle, Bathurst and other places behind them. It was decided to thoroughly organise the'trade and bring pressure to bear on the Government to redress the hardships of the small shopkeeper. VOTE FOR THURSDAY HALF-HOLIDAY!
