THE WELLINGTON GUNS.
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. Yesterday, the Hon R. H. Rhodes, Acting-Minister of Defence, made a statement in regard to a _ Wellington telegram, containing criticisms of the new mountain guns imported for the D. Battery.
Mr Rhodes said that it was true that the mountain guns sent out last year by Vickers-Maxim were not up-to-date, but it was untrue that that fact was recently discovered. • From tlie beginning, it was recognised that those guns, though good, were not true quick-firers, and in other respects were not up to modern requirements. The guns were purchased on the advice of tbo New Zealand Government's military adviser at Homo, whose appointment was consequently terminated. Tlie firm of Vickers-Maxim was communicated with and requested to take the guns back, and that the firm finally consented to do. It was understood that tlie firm had secured another purchaser for them. The statement that the ammunition was not of the right calibre was untrue. Tlie ammunition was suitable, and would have been used in camp this year if the guns had been retained.
