OBITUARY.

COLONEL J., M. M'CALMONT, M.P, United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received February 3, 10 a.m.) LONDON, February 2.

The death is announced of Colonel J. M. M'Culmont, Conservative member of the House of Commons for East Antrim, aged sixty-five years. (The late Colonel M'Calmonfc, who was born in 1847, has represented East Antrim in the Conservative interests since 1885. He was educated at Eton, and served in the"Bth Hussars, retiring with the rank of captain in 1874. Ho was aido-de-camp to Karl Cowpor and the late Duke of Marlborough when Viceroys of Ireland. Judging from the past history of the seat, it is unlikely that the approaching by-election will be invested with a great deal of interest, as it has been consistently Conservative since the Homo Rule issue became a vital question in British politics more than a quarter of a century agio. At the- election held in 188(1, following the rejection of Mr Gladstone's first' Home Rule Bill, Colonel M'Calmont was returned unopposed, and at the general elections hold in 1802 and 1895 ho encountered no opposition. At the general election of 1900 he was opposed by Dr King Kerr, who stood as a Presbyterian and Conservative, but Colonel M'Calmont was successful, polling 3582 against 2653 cast for his rival, In 1906 he was opposed by Major Bcddoes, a Liberal, but Colonel M'Calmont was returned by a two to one majority. At the two general elections, held in 1910 the seat waa not challenged.)
