An interesting case bearing on the preference clause of the seamen's agreement will come before the .Wellington Magistrate's Court early next month. The action is one in which Julius Hansen claims from the secretary of the Federated Seamen's Union the sum of £l9 damages. The facts are that by an agreement dated January 24, 1912, between the Union and the various shipping companies preference to unionists was conceded. The plaintiff is a seaman holding " Y.G." discharges, and on December 11 last lw applied in writing to the defendant Union, through its secretary, for membership. His application was accompanied by a suta of 16s, the maximum sum for entrance fee and subscription. It is alleged by plaintiff that tho defendant Union has " unlawfully neglected and refused to permit" him to join the Union " with the intention of preventing him from obtaining work."
