Newspapers' have devoted some attention to Australia's birthday, whilst thousands of people wore wattle in the streets.. (A crowded gathering-took place at the Colonial Institute, where Sir George Reid expressed regret at Mr Deakin's ill-health and retirement. Mr Deakin, he said, had devoted the, whole of his brilliant gifts to public life and rendered ' memorable service to the State, the Commonwealth and' the Empire. Mr Joseph Cook' would be a worthy successor. Sir George gave a summary of facts, showing Australia's remarkable progress. The hope was generally expressed that the celebration would be repeated or a larger scale.
