Tho "Star" states that Mr W. S. Short, legal advisor to tho Public Works Department will become UnderSecretary to the Justice Department, vico Mr F. G. B. Waldegrave, and that Inspector Cullon, of Auckland, has boen appointed Commissioner of Police. Dr vSa.lmond, Solicitor-General, has been granted a year's leave of absence to visit England. Mr C. A. Piper, District Traffic "Manager at Dunedin, will become Chief Traffic Superintendent for the dominion, and has been transferred to Wellington forthwith.
THE NEW POLICE COMMISSIONER
Mr John Cullen, who has been in charge of the Auckland Police District since 1899. and who now becomes Commissioner of Police in secession to Mr F. G. B. Waldegravo, is a native of Ireland, and is, sixty years of age. At the age of eighteen he joined the Royal Trisli Constabulary, and remained in the force for seven years. In 1876 he decided to emigrate., and, selecting New Zealand as liis future home, joined the. Colonial Armed Constabulary immediately <>n his arrival. Since then he has been connected with the force, and during Ms long service ,1s a police officer has been stationed in a largo number of centres, including Blenheim, Dunedin, Timaru, Christchurch. Napier and "Wanganui. Thirteen years ago lie succeeded the late Inspector Hickson at Auckland, and during the last few years his namo has been repeatedly mentioned in connection with the Coram issionership.
