ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
RAILWAY COLLISION. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received November 1, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 1. A mail train and a stock train had a head-on collision at I'icton Lake, through the stock train leaving the rails. The driver and fireman of one of tho trains were seriously injured, and six passengers wore less severely liurt. The engine was badly damaged. A dozen truclts left the rails. The body of a young woman, ared twenty-seven, was found on tho beach this morning, and was subsequently identified as that of a domestic servant named Bertha Rapley. The body had nothing on but a nightdress, but further along tho beach was_ found a cloak, and thero wcro footprints indicating that she had deliberately walked into tlio sea. A letter was found where sl'.o was employed, istating she had " brought disgrace on thorn all and had better end it." A single man, a jockey, named Frank Hutchinson, a resident of Hastings, was admitted to the Hospital yearly this morning suffering from injuries to his back sustained by_ a fall from_ a hors© which ho was training at Riccarton. Hutchinson waß too dazed to give any account of how ho came to fall from tho horse. He is progressing favourably. The police authorities hi Christchurch were informed to-day that i\lrs Julia Hewitt died at the Akaroa Hpsprfcal yesterday at 6 p.m. from n> juries received when she was thrown from a gig after tho horse had taken fright ancf bolted on Long Bay Road on October 24.
