ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

[Pir Press Association.] DUNEDIN, August 17. A fatal accident occurred at the Kaitangata coalmine early this afternoon, by which a young man named Joseph Carson lost his life. Early in the day a- fall of stone occurred in one of the dips and a batch of men was put on to clear it away. While engaged in timbering, a large stone, which they had previously' failed to dislodge, fell out, broke " down the timbering and crushed Carson, who was pinned to the ground and cut so severely in the groin that he bled to death shortly after. Three other men were injured slightly.

Mrs French, wife of the caretaker of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's gruonds, broke her leg yesterday and was admitted to the Hospital. She is progressing favourably.
