HARBOUR BOARD.

A monthly meeting of the Waimakariri Harbour Board was held on Monday evening; present—Messrs B. Lissaman (chairman), Edmonds, Revell, Keetloy, Wvlio, M'lntosh, Skevington, Wright and Barnard. Mr 1. N. Eagle wrote asking the Board.to put a skylight in the roof of his shop, as the light at present was insufficient for his work, the matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Mr Hadeke wrote stating that he would repair the shaft of the dredge it in good working order for £l6 7s 6d. The action of the chairman in authorising Mr Hadeke to proceed with the work was confirmed. Correspondence was received from the Marine Department asking what methods the Board had foi the preservation of life and the announcement of distress signals, and enclosing copies of the new harbour regulations. Tho secretary was instructed to give the necessary information. The harbourmaster reported that the averago depth on the bar for the month was Bft 6in. The river had remained the same practically all the month, with the exception of the gut at Stewart's Gully, which had silted up slightly. All the piles for the breakwater had now been driven, and brushwood was being put in. He recommended that a coloured light should be kept burning nightly at the outer end ot the Gully breakwater. The report was adopted. The dredgemaster reported that he had commenced dredging, but had experienced a difficulty in regard to the steamers continually going up and down the river. The report was adopted. It was resolved that in future it should be left in the hands of the Works Committee to pay off men when deemed necessary. Air Revell moved—" That a committee of the Board should be set- up to consider the advisability of creating a rating area for the Board." Mr Revell explained at some length that by obtaining a rating area the Board would be able to raise money by way of a loan to make harbour improvements. Several, members .'.-.poke strongly against the proposition. The motion was lost by five votes to three. It was decided to invite tender- tor the right to cutwillows on the Board's property. The receipts since the previous meeting were reported at £B3 .17s lOd. the accouuts recommended for payment were £H9 3s Id, and the debit balance at the bank was £57 16s 6d.
