DEFEATED BY WAIRARAPA. [Pkk Pp.ess Association.] CARTERTON, September 13. The match, between Wairarapa and Canterbury was played here to-day in beautiful, weather, Wairarapa winning by nineteen points to three. Canterbury kicked off, and quickly penned Wairarapa, in their twenty-five, where from a. penalty Hasell kicked a goal for Canterbury. Wairarapa- livened up, the forwards playing excellent football, and dribbled the hall right up the field to the Canterbury goal, where Hodge picked up and scored a brilliant try near the posts. Masson converted. Wairarapa 5, Canterbury 3. Shortly after tho kick-off a free-kick was awarded to Canterbury in front of the Wairarapa goal, but Hasell failed. Play for ten minutes was.in neutral territory. K. Welch brilliantly carriedan attack right up to the Canterbury goal, where he passed to N. M'Konzie, who scored, and E. Skeet kicked a goal. Wairarapa 10, Canterbury 3. Two free-kicks to Wairarapa were result-less, and the spell ended. Canterbury livened up from the kickout, hut the. Wairarapa forwards were too good and repeatedly ran through them, only the excellent individual defence of the Canterbury hacks saving the situation. In Canterbury territory a free-kick was awarded to Wairarapa, and E. Skeet added another goal.
Wairarapa 13, Canterbury 3. A few minutes later the same kicker was again successful in a shot at goal from a mark. Wairarapa 16, Canterbury 3. A spell of long kicking ensued, interspersed with furious forward rushes by both sides. The Wairarapa backs wore solid in defence, but lacked initiative. The visitors' backs were not playing well, and time after time passing rushes were spoilt by one of the line mishandling a pa.ss and knocking on. The Wairarapa forwards broke through again as the spell was drawing to a finish and carried the war into the.enemy's camp. R. M'Konzie secured a- try, but Skeet failed at goal, and Wairarapa, won by nineteen points (two goals, a penalty goal, a goal from a mark and a try) "to three points (a penalty goal). Throughout the game the Wairarapa forwards more than held their own. It their opponents secured, the ball in the scrum the home forwards daehed through and smothered the passing, while if a- rush was started, the Wairarapa backs successfully combated it by excellent line work all through. Canterbury were forced five or six times, and Wairarapa only once. Mr A. B. Charters was referee.
ASSOCTATTON FOOTBALL. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 15. \ special meeting of the Auckland Football Association was held this evening to«consider Canterbury s challenge for the Brown Shield. It was decided to accept the chaWenge. and the match will be played on the date suggested, viz., September 24.
