A Kobo message states that eighteen persons were drowned from the steamer Bedford, and that the vessel is in jeopardy. (Received August 23, 11 a.m.)
The cruiser Bedford was making trials at full speed when, she ran ashore at Quelpart. The inrush of water caused the deaths of the engineer, fifteen stokers, and two seamen. The remainder were taken off by the Minotaur. Tho Monmouth stood by the wreck, but the heavy seas forced her to put to sea during the night. The Bedford is full of water to the engine-room bulkhead. Admiral Winslowe reports that there is little chance of saving her. THE DYNAMITE-LADEN STEAMER DIFFICULTY WITH CREW AND DUMPERS. (Received August 23, 10.10 a.m.) ADELAIDE, August 23. Tho fire on the steamer South Africa destroyed the storeroom and saloon, and only a wooden partition separated tho : magazine from, tho storeroom. Eleven members' of the crew have loft the vessel's service, and the dumpers hare refused to work the cargo unless paid five shillings per hour, which Jias been declined.
