RESULT OF THE FIRST BALLOT. [Per Press Association.] THAMES, February 1. Official details of the first ballot in connection with the Thames election ! were only available to-night. In the ; backblocks districts the rivers were j flooded, and several deputy-returning-I officers were unable to get across earlier with the ballot papers. The votes poll- | ed were as follows : — ] E. H. Taylor Government sup- ; porter 1308 ; 'W. H. Lucas, selected Govern- : ment candidate . . . 850 < E Deeble, Opposition . . . 574 ; T. W. Rhodes, Government supporter .... 557 ' F. H. Haselden, , Opposition . 493 , Mr Taylor is 584 short of an abso- -1 lute majority. A second ballot will be taken on Thursday, between Mr Taylor , and Mr Lucas. '
