WELLINGTON NOTES.
[Fkom Otth Corhespondent.] i WELLINGTON, June 4. I have good authority for stating that a police inspector in one of the North Island districts will shortly retire, and this step will lend to important changes consequent upon re-arrangements of the police staff in the dominion. It is also understood that the growing requirements of the district will necessitate the appointment of an officer of a higher grade than the one at present stationed at Palmerston North. _ , Mr Boyd Beunie, inspector of mines at the Thames, who was sent down to Blackball at the request of the Trades and Labour Council to report on the ventilation of the mine, has completed his investigations and returned to Wellington. Mr Bennie declines to furnish any information as to the result of hre. investigations until it has passed through Ministerial channels. I have reason, however, for suspecting that the report will show that the ventilation of the mine is in every way satisfactory according to the conditions prevailing at Blackball. The Act requires that 18.000 cubic feet of air per minute shall be circulated in the mine, and I believe that Mr Bennie found that the quantity reached as high as 89,000 cubic feet per minute.
