The Grand Cross of St Michael and St George has been conferred on Earl Dudley In accepting the freedom of the city of Bristol, Lord Dudley assured the Mayor and the City Council that ha regarded fhe gift as a graceful compliment to the Commonwealth. He said he would do his best to promote a feel-* ing of sympathy between all parts of the Empire,, and added a warm tribute to Sir Redvers Buller's life-long devoW tion to his country. Earl Dudley, addressing the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, remarked that many English industries could nourish! only «if they acted together without petty jealousies, in order to combat huge trusts and foreign competition^. He believed that Bristol was admirably situated to secure a larger share of th« Australia-a trade-.
