THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND.
ANNUAL SESSION. The Senate of the University of New Zealand resumed this morning, the Chancellor, Sir Robert Stout,, presiding. Professor J. M. Brown moved — " That in Section 6 of the statute of senior scholarships the words 'after his matriculation ' be omitted, and the following substituted : ' after entering on the first year of his College course. Professor Brown said the motion proposed to remove the hardship in several cases where the student was debarred from taking a senior scholarship by allowing the prescribed time to 'elapse after his matriculation. There would be no difficulty in determining when the first year of the College course commenced. Professor J. R. Brown seconded the motion. The Chancellor questioned whether the Senate should encourage for senior scholarships those who delayed entering on the College course. Supposing a person passed in, matriculation, he was not bound to matriculate. He might go to the College in certain subjects without matriculating, or he might have private tuition. Was he to compete with men or women who immediately after matriculation commenced a College course ? An amendment by Professor Sale to add the worde, " after passing matriculation examination and entering on the first year of a. College course," and an amendment by Professor Shand to add the words, " subsequent to matriculation," were lost. The motion was also lost.
