• - — ; — ♦ This morning the officers and engineers of the Union Steamship^ Company's s.s. Rotomahana met in the saloon, of the steamer for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr A. E. Carman, third engineer of the steamer, who is about io be married. Mr Levestam, chief engineer of the Rotomahana, presided, and, on behalf of the officers and engineers, presented _ Mr Carman with a handsome case of silver fruit-knives and forks. The health of the recipient and his bride was drunk with the customary honours, and several officers bore testimony to his popularity on the vessel. Mr Carman heartily thanked his shipmates for their handsome present and their good wishes. mmmmmmmimmm mm^ mm __ __
Ether was first used in surgical operations in 1846. The strangest military body in the world is a band of cavalry at Saint de Moorvay, a province on the East Coadt of Africa, which is under the rule of the French Governor-General at Madagascar. These eoldiers go about their military operations on oxen. The animals- are lean creatures, and it is -»td they move with surprising rapidity.
Captain' Edwin's weather forecast today was as follows:—" Northerly strong wind to gale ; glass fall ; tides good ; sea moderate." The Hon J. A. Millar, Minister of Labour, has received a letter from Mr Price, the Premier of South Australia, asking for information regarding the labour legislation of the colony. The Minister is supplying the information asked for. A lad, aged eleven years and three montlis. pleaded guilty, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., at a sitting of the Juvenile Court, this morning, to a charge of stealing a bicycle. He was convicted and discharged, his father being ordered to pay £5, the value of the bicycle, to the owner, by weekly instalments of 5s per week.
