The Archbishop of Canterbury, addressing tlie Diocesan Education Society, at Ramegate, stated that if the Government were> to begin afresh on a simpler plan, with a genuine desire to meet the difficulties shown in recent debates, the prospects of success were not inconsiderable. It would be deplorable if the Government were to repudiate a vii-tual bargain made in 1870 thatdenominational teaching should be maintained in the schools, which the Church built at a cost of £26",000,000.<
