CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON

The interprovincial cricket match, Canterbury v. Wellington, was continued in. fine, bright weather, though a cool easterly breeze was blowing. There had be&n no rain since Saturday, and the wicket was faster than at the opening of the match. Play began at 11.5 a.m., Pattrick (not out 8) and Bain (not out 0) resuming Canterbury's first innings, the score standing at 11 for two wickets. Tucker and Upham took charge of the bowling. The attendance at the start was only poor. Bain hit Upham hard to leg for 4, but with 7 runs added Upham beat Pattrick. 18—3—8. Anthony filled the vacancy, and at once got busy, hitting hard and crisply, the out-field being faster than on Saturday. The running between wickets was, however, distressingly ©low, several easy singles being missed;. Bain being specially slow to move. After scoring 13 Anthony was easily caught, at the wickets off Tucker. 35 — 4 — 13. Lawrence signalised his entry- by cutting Tucker for 4, Bain driving the same bowler prettily to the off for .a similar number. At 51 Laws went on in place of Tucker, and at 59 Hales took the ball from Upham. At 66 Laws found Fsm's off stump. 66-^-5—25. Bain had played strong but glow cricket for his runs. Reese joined Lawrence, and the running between wickets was smartened. . The scoring was very slow, and the game_monotonous, 11 runs being scored in twentythree minutes. At 80 Upham was again tried in place of Laws, but after bowling one over Tucker relieved him, anfl Upham changed over. Both batsmen were playing confidently but carefully: At 95 Reese was smartly caught in the slips by Beechey off Upham. 95—6 — 17. Ollivier came next, and Laws relieved Tucker. The century showed just before the lunch adjournment, which * was taken with the score at 104, Lawrence being not out 31. The 'Canterbury innings was resumed at 1.50. l^awrence immediately got busy, bringing up 110 with two pretty drives, and Ollivier equare-cut Upham to the boundary for four. A misunderstanding nearly resulted in Lawrence being run out. Runs came slowly, and Lawrence brought 129 on the board and 50 against has own name by ,*lriving Laws to the on boundary, and the Wellington score was passed ,as the outcome, of two and three-quarter hours' play. Tucker then replaced Laws. At 148 Ollivier was caught in the slips by Upham off Tucker. 148 — 7—17. Whitta was the newcomer,^ and hit Tucker twice in succession to the on boundary. Runs began to come faster, but at 168 Lawrence was easily taken in the slips off Upham from a weak stroke. 168— B—6o.8 — 60. 'Lawrence made his runs by good solid cricket. The end came quickly; Whitta was clean caught r in the slips for 15, Boxshall scoring 3, Bennett not out 4. The innings closed for 176.
