MR. ASHTON'S REPLY.

(Received January 21, 9.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 21. In reference to Mr Thomson's statements in regard to the Peel River Estate, Mr Ashton said that no euch statement as that attributed to him by Mr Thomson was ever made by him. It was quite possible that the statement was drawn from a portion of his speech, made in introducing the Closer Settlement Bill last session, when he pointed out that the present system put the Government in the position of having to deI preciate properties if it wanted to acquire them ; and later on of having to make the best- of them if the Government wanted to sell them. Some statement of that character was made, ! but nothing of the character attributed to him by Mr Thomson. The Government, according to Mr Ashton, will probably resume the estate. That is a matter which will be decided upon by the Cabinet as soon as the Premier comes back. Mr Gamithers has already stated that unless he gets a reasonable offer the provisions of the Closer Settlement Act will be put into operation, and that that statement still holds good.
