THE WEATHER.

Light showers fell in North Conterbury during last night and early this morning, but the rain was only sufficient to moisten the surface soil. Nevertheless, its refreshing effects will be much appreciated. \ Eight hours heavy rain fell in parts of South and Mid-Canterbury last night. The Methven correspondent of. the " Star " wrote last evening as follows: — After a hot morning the wind veered round to the south- west about five o'clock this, evening, and an hour later a light drizzling rain commenced to fall, which is increasing in volume as the evening wears on. It will be very welcome for the graes lands and the turnips, but farmers who are busy reaping will not be so thankful. [From Our Correspondent.] KAIKOURA, January 18. After a beautiful day yesterday, the weather changed last night. It is now blowing and raining heavily from the south, and is very cold. A heavy southerly sea is running. ASHBURTON, January 18. "Welcome rain began, to fall in the Ashburton. district about 9.30 p.m. last evening, and continued until 5.80 a.m. this morning, when the weather showod signs of clearing. During the night some very heavy showers fell, which will do immense good to the pastures and the rape and turnip crops. The rain will also have a good effect on store sheep, as, owing to the dry weather and the scarcity of feed, this class of sheep have failed to find buyers at recent markets. Although harvest is in full swing in many districts, the rain will not have done any damage, as the weather is oold, with a steady wind blowing. On the back Tangos a fall of snow has taken place. The Domain weather station, this morning registered .23. points of rain, with 2deg of frost. [Per Press Association.] v DUNEDIN, January 18. The drought has been followed by a wintry snap. Advices from Cromwell state that there is snow on the ranges.
