WELLINGTON WOOL SALES.
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 18. The third of the season's series of wool sales opened to-day, over 10,000 bales being offered, a local record. Some fifty buyers were present, and bidding started keenly. . Nothing of merit was allowed to pass. The first catalogue submitted was that of the United Farmers' and Wairarapa Farmers'. Prices for medium croiss-breds were about cne same as- at last month's sales. Coarse cross-bred, and shabby parcels were in some cases a farthing more. There was good competition for the fine croWbred lines, which were well-grown and clean, and the prices realised were a farthing in advance of the previous sale prices. Lamb wa6 sold at a slight advance on previous sale rates. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company reports spirited competition for good cross-breds and prices fully up to k||j sales, and in some instances advances were obtained. Inferior and faulty cross-breds met with irregular competition, seedy lots being neglected. Half-bred was not keenly competed for. and prices were easier. Merino sold well, 9*d to lOtd being realised. The sale is proceeding. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Limited, have received the following cable message from their London office, dated January 17: — "Since our last; telegram, prices of prime Australian lamb, 821 b. to 401 b, are lower by id per lb. Prices of light carcases of frozen mutton are firm, whilst prices of hea»ry carcases are a shade easier. The market, for New Zealand frozen beef is weak, but prices are not quotably changed."
