A large number pf the public assembled, and the band's efifortswerfr heartily appreciated. Mr M. Ryan, who for some considerable tame has been bandmaster of the Mayfceld Band, has removed to Timaru. Sir P. Malone, of Christchurch, has asBujned control of tie hand, and, a correspondent informs me, he is getting on very well. Nothing has been heard of late of the proposed contest which it was said the Dunedin Competitions Society intended to hold in connection with its annual festival during October. This It.ong hody could easily undertake and successfully manage a big contest.. Pro-, bably there is a fear that it would clash with the second grade competir tion of the Otago and Southland. Brass Bands' Association, which is to be held' about that; time; but si_ch a contingency could be easily avoided; In view of the proposed contest in connection with the . Christchurch Exhibition, a preliminary run at a Dunedin - kvent would be acceptable to all South island— and probably some of the North island— -bands. ■ The Wellington Garrison Band is advertising in the "Canterbury Times" for solo baritone, first horn and first cornet players./ Applicants, who must be' good instrumentalists, should apply,
