THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS IN ENGLAND. THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND. AUSTRALIANS v. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph — Copyright. (Received May 6, 9.18 a.m.) LONDON, May 5. The match was resumed to-day in bright weather, but the. attendance was small. The wicket was faster. Warner was run out without making any addition to the score, by the absurd attempt of both batsmen to gain one end, and Warner, had no chance of getting back. Armstrong bowled the first over — one for 1. Cotter bowled from the other end, and the first important hit was a pretty four to leg by Beldam off him. i Grace received a knock on the left hand from a fullpitch from Cotter. Grace was easily caught by Duff at short-leg. Two for 10. Poidevin followed, but Beldam got his leg before in trying to turn a ball to leg just when he was shaping well. Three for 20. Fry came next, and the first change in the bowling was made, Hopkins going on in place of Cotter. At 26 Fry hit two fours and a single off the newcomer in the second over, then four off Armstrong, and then threw away his wicket by starting a stupid run. Poidevin at first did not want to start, and Fry could not get back. Four for 47. M'Laren's stay wajfi brief. He had made a single when Hopkins bowled him, and he had previously given a chance for stumping off Armstrong. Five for 57. Jessop partnered Poidevin. The latter, who had batted carefully for an hour, gave Hopkins an easy catch to mid-on. Six for 71. Jessop and Lawton carried the game to the luncheon hour, putting on runs at a fair pace, but Jessop was not aggressive. , After luncheon, Cotter's second ball was fatal to Jessop, giving Darling a soft one at cover point. Seven for 111. Odell filled the vacancy, but was clean bowled by Cotter after scoring four. Eight for 124. Robson was disposed of for a single. Nine for 133. Brearley, the last man, was caught at the wickets, the innings closing for 156. Lawton showed clean driving, and was batting about an hour. (Received May 6, 9.37 a.m.) Duff and Trumper opened to Brearley and Beldam. Trumper unsuccessfully tried to sweep Beldam round. One for 15. Hill filled the vacancy, and Duff; indulging in clean hitting, powerfully drove Beldam for five, which was increased to nine by an overthrow. He then gave Fry a catch at third man. Two for 52. Runs came freely,* and 50 went up in thirty-five minutes. Very good batting ensued, and with Hill and Noble together, 7 Odell relieved Brearley when the score stood at 79. (Received May 6, 12.25 p.m.) When the stumps were drawn Hill (82) and Noble (69) were still together, the score being two wickets for 201. Odell and Jessop bowled, but there was no sting in their bowling, of which the batsmen were easily masters. A hundred went up amid cheering. Hill completed' his 50 in seventy-five minutes, and Bsearley went on again, but 17 were scored off his first over. Lawton, at the other end, had 10 knocked off his first over, all by Noble, who was hitting, splendidly. The bowling was extremely weak during the last hour or more.
