AN INTERESTING CASE. [Pan Prr33 AssocrATiox.] WAIHI, February 23. Thomas Gardner, a well-known music dealer, waß fined 5s and costs for being on licensed premises during prohibited hours. The iacis are that Gardner's wife being seriously ill t he went to the hotel at eleven o'clock at night for some stimulant for her. Finding Sergeant Sheehan on the watch, he appealed to him for permission to get some gin. Gardner, whom the police admit is a sober man, asked the sergeant tp visit his house, and satisfy himself as to his wife's illness. The sergeant refused, and on returning home, Gardner, finding his wife was no better, in desperation went to the hotel and secured the gin. The case caused great public indignation, and the fine and legal costs were promptly paid by public subscription, as a /protest against the action of the police. The amount of the fine and costs was pffered twentyfold.
