A BIBULOUS DIPLOMAT. — ♦
Mr Andrew White, in " A Diplomat's Recollections of Russia," says that about 1840 the United States was represented at St Petersburg by an exSenator, who occasionally excused himself Jrom engagoinents on the ground of " sudden indisposition." The first person to lose patience waß the Minister's valet, an Irishman, who went to the Consulate and said: " Oi'll not stay wid his Igsillincy army longer; Oi'ye done wid 'iin." V What's the trouble now?", said Mr Princo (the Consul). , "Well." said the man, "this mornin' Oi thought it was toime to git his Igsillincy out of bed, for he had been drunk about a week, and in bed most of tho fcoime; and so Oi wint to 'im and ««ayß Oi, gentle-loike, 'Would your Igsillincy have a cup of coffee?' when he rose up and shtruck me in the face. On that Oi took 'im by the collar, lifted 'im out of bed, took 'im acrass the room, showed im his ugly face in the glass, and Oi said to 'im, says Oi, 'Is thim the eyes of an invoy igstraorr-rrdinarry and ministher plinipotentiarry?' "
