THE " CANTERBURY TIMES."
The illustrations of this week's "Canterbury Times" are particularly interesting. A panorama of the Volunteer parade on Sunday, September 11 is given. This is a* really fine picture, and : it shows the ground upon which the new drillshed for the local "Volunteers is shortly to be erected. There are several snap-shots of the play in the football match between Canterbury and Wangamii representatives ; views of Nelson aod. its surroundings ; a- pretty photographic series of picturesque Stewart Island, whioh is now a. popular tourist- resort, and pictorial" representation.; of a. typical Nelson Jim melon crop ; the kerosene store fire in Wellington ; tlie Chines® on tho Rand, showing the Chinese* compound m the New Comet mino ; and a: new narcissus, a- seedling raised by Mr F. Biggs, of Chri-t,-church, which is characteristic of the trumpet, being frilled to its* whole-length, besides many other pictures treating on various subjects. In the literary department of the popular weekly magazine there is much to interest subscribers. "Humane* Slaug'ivteririg" is an article in the Agricultural Co;---uin-n, which deals with, the question, of th. killing of cattle and' animals ior food consumption in a careful manner. Tho argument deduced is to the effect that a bea-s-t should be stunned' before blood is drawn. Another* article which will interest breeders and dairymen is " Compensation for Condemned Cattle." " The' Great North-west " ■series, on Canadian resources and settlement, by Mr Spencer Capham, is continued. In the Ladies* Column there is much useful information) for tihe home, and feminine interests are thoughtfully -studied. Tie following are a few of the lea-ding articles :— '• The Fashionable Figure," " The- Perfect Foot," "Advice to Those- About to Marry," "Bathing in Light," " Health Hints," and "Tlie Management of the Oven/ A new and sensational serial story is cominenc-sd^in the current number. It is entitled, " Who Giveth this Woman?" by a well-known and popular Writer. Storiettes which-add-pleas-ing variety to the fiction pages are "The Great Pink Pearl Robbery," ' : Josh, the Reborn," " The Marrying of Millicent" axs},. the " Boojoo Man." ' - In the Dsa-jjJ. 6 Column an article on " Soldiers of the Jtevag " treats .on the attitude oif our youth toward* the Volunteer movement. *' Lord Roberts on War " is an article containing .ome fa-enchant remarks of our great general. In the Music Column, the great pianist, Paderewski, is the subject of asketeh. • Recent. in.pcat3-rt iootba'll matches are carefully reviewed in th*© column devoted to t*hft ball. Cricket enthusiasts axe given English and colonial notes* amd! prospects of the coining season ar© touched on. Tlie other columns of the weekly paper, such as those set -aside for athletics, wheeling, boxing, band's, tennis, . ohe'ss and draughts-, contain a wealth of instructive and interesting news. "Daphne's'" graphology .system of character deliueatio-n is- receiving enormous* support- Early application is necessary to ensure a reading withia a reasonable time. The sporting editor reviews recent facing, and touches on Cup prospects. Latest betting quotations amd a revised list of the New Zealand* Cup. weights also appear. The best household paper of this colony is the "Canterbury Times." if not a subscriber* to any weekly paper, you should order the popular journal at once. It will be sent to any address, and the oost is very small for so excellent a production.
