CYCLING.

DON WALKER BEATE2J". ■United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. (Received August 29, 9.12 a.m.) PARIS, August 28. ! M. Jacquelin beat Don Walker, tho Australian cyclist, in a match over a thousand metres. Jacquelin won the first heat by ten inches and the second heat by eighteen inches. (Don Walker, the Australian cyclist mentioned, lias had an exceptionally successful career on colonial tracks, his winnings amounting to over £3000. He left Sydney, in company with Major Taylor, on June 6 for America, with the intention of doing a little racing in America, and also having a try in Paris, but his principal intention was to compete in the world's championships at the Crystal Palace, London. Writing at the time of his departure, Australian writers did not appear very sanguine of Don's chances of success, for though he possessed a brilliant sprint and has a long record of successes in Australia he was not reckoned good enough to prevail against the class of riders he will meet at the premier meet o* fchs cycling world. Speaking to a representative of the "Australian Cyclist, 11 Major Taylor said that during his last season m Australia he had watched Walker's riding with ever-increasing Admiration, and the world's champion reckoned Walker a foe- j man whom he himself had to regard seriously. It is ten years since Megson, Lewis ; and Payne went Home to show the Old ! World what Australia could produce m the , way of cvclinsr champions. Their tour was I not remarkably successful. Ben Goodson, later on. represented Australia as an amateur in the world's championships, with mid-nin^ success, and Don Walkers appear- | ance will be the first as regards the profes- j sional branch. Jacquelin, Walkers conqueror on this occasion, is the crack French snrintpv and he has been in the forefront of Continental riders for some seasons past.) _ im
