STARVING PROSPECTORS
■ m DROWNED WHEN WEAK PROM HUNGER. Frank Hayes, of Vancouver city, returned on July 18 from the head of Butte Inlet with a terrible tale of starvation, and the report of the death of a comrade. He and Jacob Scholtz, also of Vancouver left there several weeks ago on a prospecting trip, and when miles from any settlement ran out of provisions. After starving for two days they killed their dog and ate him, and journeyed along as well as they could to salt water. Scholtz, while crossing a small stream, fell down and "was so exhausted he could nob regain hus feet. .Hayes was so weak he conld render no assistance, and saw his comrade drown before hi- eyes. Hayes subsisted on what remained of the dog and what berries ha could gather until he reached the coast, where be met friendly Indians z who attended to hia wants. Hayes was three weeks in recovering sufficient strength to resume his' home-, ward journey. t
